Wildflower and Plants of Sonoma Coast Seminar - May 15 Stewards' Annual Golf Tournament |
Happy Mother's Day to all the Mom's out there. Hope you all had a wonderful day enjoying your families. Last Saturday we celebrated Stewards' 25th Anniversary with our May Day in the Redwoods event. It turned out very nice with a memorable ceremony with elected officials, partners from the past and present and acknowledgements for some very special volunteers. State Parks presented Volunteer Medallions to Bea Brunn, Joyce Bacci and Elinor Twohy. Poppy Awards were given to Lanny Keyston, Bill Bambrick, Norman Hill and John Cole. The children enjoyed the "Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights" activities. Horse and Carriage We are nearing the end of our Docent Orientation and Training season. Our last Docent Orientation will take place on May 15th, as well as a wonderful seminar on the Wildflower and Plants of Sonoma Coast. Be sure to sign up early this week so you don't miss out. This week I was treated to a very nice blog by one of our fellow Stewards, Lynn Millar. Check it out! I'd like to ask your help with finding golfers for our Annual Golf Tournament on June 4th. See below for information on how to register. My best to you all,
Michele Luna, Executive Director Wildflowers and Plants of Sonoma Coast
For Seminar Only: State Parks Volunteer Docent/Stewards General Orientation – Session 3 REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED ON OUR WEBSITE OR Save the Whales Day - May 23rd
In 1986, when Stewards' Whale Watch program began, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) enacted a ban on commercial whaling. This important moratorium helped to restore the declining numbers of whales, including the California gray whale, which is our state's official state marine mammal. At their June meeting, the IWC is expected to vote on suspending this moratorium in exchange for loosely enforced quotas. Organizations throughout the nation are working together to protest this action and gathering in many locations around the nation on May 23rd to make their voices heard in protest. In Sonoma County, Coastwalk is organizing a gathering at the whale totem sculpture at Doran Beach at 10:00 am.
