What an incredible day!
It was absolutely gorgeous is the Willow Creek watershed today as Stewards and project partners celebrated the completion of the Willow Creek 2nd Bridge Project. This project completed a ten-year effort to deal with the fish passage issues that prevented coho from spawning in the waterhed for many years. With a new bridge in place and the stream having the abiliy to move about as it chooses, there is now hope that the 11,000 coho planted in Willow Creek in October will find their way out of the creek to the ocean when they are ready.
We were honored to have Ruth Coleman, Director of California State Parks, Chuck Bonham, Director of the California Department of Fish and Game, Pat Rutten from the NOAA Restoration Center and Efren Carrillo, 5th District Supervisor as our guest speakers. In addition, Assemblyman Jared Huffman and Caryl Hart, Regional Parks Director and State Park Commissioner attended.

Expressions of gratitude were express to all the partners who invested time and money towards the project"s completion. Stewards thanked all our funders and partners with photo acknowledgements of the creek. Special thanks were given to Brendan O'Neil, Environmental Scientist with State Parks, Steven Chatham, Lauren Hammack, Kathie Lowrey and Doug Loudan from Prunuske Chatham, Derek Acomb from the Department of Fish and Game, Joe Pecharich from NOAA Restoration Center, RGH Geotechnical, Morris Construction and the Sonoma County Water Agency.
As Ruth Coleman said, today was an historic event and in 50 years people will look at our photos in a visitor center and comment on the habitat restoration work we did during this era. Cheers to us all!

On Satuday, December 10th State Parks and Stewards partnered to provide holiday trees for those in need. This very successful community event provided trees for 150 families and the Guerneville community church. The trees were removed as part of an envrionmental restoration effort to preserve coastal native grasslands. Thanks again to Brendan O'Neil and his staff for making this event possible and to the State Park staff and volunteers who helped out that day.

Our talented local photographer Kevin O'Connor is donating 100% of the proceeds from 22 of his framed photographs to Stewards. The photographs are on display at Coffee Bazaar in Guerneville. Many the nature photos that we use are from Kevin's collection. He has generously donated the rights to Stewards. Stop in and pick out a wonderful gift for a friend or family member and support Stewards at the same time.

First Day Hikes

California State Parks and Stewards are partnering to participate in the Amercan's State Parks First Day Hikes, which will take place on New Years Day. We are offering two hikes, one at Armstrong Redwoods and one at Goat Rock State Beach.
Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, Guerneville, 11:00am
Hike Leader: Ranger Ellen Brem
Meet outside the Visitor Center. Choose an easy .8 mile (one-way) hike or a moderate 2 mile (round-trip) hike through the redwoods. Bring water, snacks, hiking shoes, layered clothing, rain gear. Hike rain or shine. No dogs or bicycles. Moderate portion of hike may be too strenuous for children under 6.
Sonoma Coast State Park, 2 miles south of Jenner, 1:00 PM
Hike Leader: Docent Bill Ruppert
Meet at Goat Rock Beach parking lot at the end of Goat Rock Road, off Hwy 1, south of Bridgehaven, for a moderate walk on the beach to the mouth of the Russian River. Learn about the natural history of the area, the pinnipeds (harbor seals, sea lions, and elephant seals) and birds, people changing the area, and the current status of managing the estuary for fish restoration. Bring water, snacks, hiking shoes, layered clothing, wet weather gear. Heavy rain cancels.
