Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve | Austin Creek State Recreation Area

June 18th, 8 AM to June 21st, 3 PM

Join Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods for an exciting four day summer program combining learning, leadership & inquiry in the outdoors! Beyond Forest to Sea trekkers get to explore nature, make new friends, do projects, and experience three nights of tent camping at Austin Creek's backcountry camps. Activities will take place in Armstrong Redwoods and Austin Creek. Topics will include leadership, backpacking skills, survival skills, as well as topics in ecology, geology and history in the context of our beautiful parks. For a teen backpacking opportunity on our coast please consider the Sonoma Coast & Pomo Canyon Teen Backpacking Camp in late July.

Day Camp Info

  • Leader: Hutton Wade
  • For children/students 13 to 15 years of age as of June 1st, 2019 
  • Cost is $300 per child (scholarships available)
  • Environmental and outdoor education led by trained Stewards Docents, Naturalists and Staff                 
  • Parent/guardian drop-off and pick-up required
  • Backpacking gear available for loan

What to bring: Light to Mid-weight Clothing for 4 days (warm days, cool nights), Daypack, Multi-Day Backpack, Water container, Hiking boots, Hat, Sunscreen, Sunglasses, Nature Journal & Pencil, PLEASE NOTE THAT GEAR IS AVAILABLE FOR LOAN

Tuesday June 18th

8:30 AM Drop Off (Visitor's Center, Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve)

Objective: Hike to Bullfrog Pond Campground (Daypacks)

Plan: Introduction and instruction

  • We will review the itinerary with the hikers and conduct a basic map reading and land navigation class.
  • Campers will be divided into at least two groups, (led and assisted by two adult leaders) given maps and treasure hunts to solve along the hike to Bullfrog campground.
  • Only daypacks are needed for this hike.
  • Overnight packs and gear will be transported to Bullfrog Pond Campground.

Wednesday, June 19th

Objective: Hike to Tom King Campground and camp


  • 7am wake up.
  • Early morning walk and nature sit spot.
  • Breakfast and break camp.
  • Groups will be given a series of problems to solve along the planned route to Tom King Campground. 

Thursday, June 20th

Objective: Hike to Mannings Flat


  • 7am wake up.
  • Early morning walk and nature sit spot.
  • Breakfast and break camp.
  • Break camp at Tom King.
  • Groups will be given a series of problems to solve along a planned route to Mannings Flat Campground.
  • Set camp.
  • Campers will rotate through 3 primitive living skills workshops. 

Friday, June 21st

Objective: Hike out to Bullfrog campground eat lunch (option hike to visitor center from Bullfrog with no packs)


  • 5am wake up.
  • Campers go on nature walks and to sit spots for 30 minutes.
  • Breakfast and break camp.
  • Campers on the trail by 7am.
  • Final Circle.
  • Campers picked up from the Visitor's Center at 3 PM. 
This itinerary is a living plan and may change between now and the beginning of camp, final itineraries will go out to participants one week prior to the start of camp.
